About the project
Huronko – The Magic Shirt of Sierra Leone This project explores the history, symbolism, and cultural significance of the Hu Ronko shirt, one of Sierra Leone’s most powerful and misunderstood traditional garments. I researched, wrote, and narrated this visual explainer to uncover the origins of the shirt, the people who created it, and how it evolved from spiritual armour to a political symbol and cultural identity marker.Through archival research, oral histories, anthropological sources, and field accounts, I developed a script that traces the Hu Ronko from its roots among the Limba people to its transformation across villages, chiefdoms, and political movements. The video combines storytelling, research interpretation, and documentary-style narration to make an overlooked part of Sierra Leone’s heritage both accessible and compelling for younger audiences.
