Kao Denero – From War to the State

About the project

Rather than treating Kao Denero only as a musician, the project examines how war, displacement, culture, and politics shaped his trajectory; from a teenage rapper performing under the name Sloop Cow during the civil war, to a national cultural figure whose influence reached diplomacy and the state.This project is a research-creation documentary tracing the life, music, and influence of Kao Denero, one of the most consequential figures in Sierra Leonean hip-hop. I researched the topic, wrote the script, voiced the narration, and edited the final video myself.
